An Overview of California’s Helmet Laws

It’s summer time. Children are out and about, enjoying the Southern California summer weather. Venturing outdoors is even more imperative now after people across the State and Country have been cooped up indoors for the past several months as a result of COVID.

Here’s a reminder that in California, everyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet while riding a bicycle. The requirement, found in Vehicle Code Section 21212, applies to anyone riding a bicycle, scooter, or skateboard. Many people are surprised to learn that their children are required to wear a helmet even if it’s for a short scooter ride. But it is the law, and parents have the unique responsibility to ensure their children are following this important safety rule.

Riders who are 18 and above are not legally required to wear a helmet. But is it still a good idea to wear one even if the law does not require it? Absolutely!

Statistics show that in a collision or a fall, a rider's head is the most likely area of the body to suffer an impact.  It can take a split-second for a rider to fall and hit the pavement in a collision. Talk to any avid or even amateur cyclist, and you are sure to hear personal experiences where a helmet saved a life.

Helmets used to be required for riding electric scooters too. But California changed the law in 2019, and helmets are no longer required for electric scooters. Riders still must be 18 years old to ride an electric scooter like a Bird or Lime in California.

We hope everyone enjoys their summer and the incredible benefits of bicycle riding. Stay safe and remember to wear your helmet!
