New year…New mandatory auto insurance limits in California!
Happy New Year everyone!
You may or may not have heard, but there is a new California law on the books.
Senate Bill 1107 went into effect on January 1, 2025. The law requires all California motorists to maintain minimum auto insurance limits of $25,000.00. This increases the previous limits of $15,000.00.
People have asked me my opinion on this issue. This law is definitely a step in the right direction, seeing that the previous limits of $15,000 were enacted over 50 years ago!
But $25,000 is still very low coverage. In my experience, even a minor collision can cause more than $25,000 in injury damages.
You can read more about the new law here.
I always tell people that it’s better to be overinsured than underinsured. If you can afford $100,000 in liability and uninsured motorist coverage, you are better off than you would be carrying the state minimum of $25,000.00. If you can swing more than $100,000 in coverage, go for it.
